Tarrant County Hospital District Bond

In November of 2018, Tarrant County voters approved the Hospital District Bond. The bond consisted of the issuance of $800,000,000 by Tarrant County on behalf of the Tarrant County Hospital District for the purpose of acquiring, constructing, improving, equipping or enlarging facilities of the hospital system, including, but not limited to, a new mental health and behavioral health hospital, a new main hospital tower for general and specialized patient care – physician nurse training – and Level One Trauma Care, a new cancer center, four new regional health centers, and a new ambulatory surgical center. 5th Annual Prostate Cancer Screening Event

The 5th Annual Healthy Lives Matter Prostate Cancer Education and Screening event was held on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Moncrief Cancer Institute.  Over 450 people were in attendance and a record total of 261 new men were screened during our largest prostate cancer screening event to date.

Volunteers from across Tarrant County including Crowley, Burleson ISD, Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus, JPS Health Network, Texas Health Resources and Moncrief Cancer Institute supported this year’s event.  Vendors were on hand to provide information on cancer support services and other essential resources.  To top it off, a classic car show, delicious vegan meal samples and autographs signed by former Texas Rangers pitcher Darren Oliver and notable NFL Alumni created a very exciting atmosphere!

5th Annual Prostate Cancer Screening Event 

3rd Annual Healthy Lives Matter Alzheimer’s Education Seminar

The 3rd Annual Healthy Lives Matter Alzheimer’s Education Seminar was held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus. Over 400 participants were in attendance with over 30 vendors providing dementia support services and other essential resources.

Sessions included a focus on sibling relationships, prevention strategies, the cost of care, brain health, and overcoming caregiver guilt. Dementia Live, a high-impact dementia simulation experience immersed participants into life with dementia, resulting in a deeper understanding of what it’s like to live with cognitive impairment and sensory change. Commissioner Brooks shared his own personal story as a caregiver and how this devastating disease not only impacts a family or a community, but an entire nation.

The event was made possible and offered free of charge by the generous support of our partners and sponsors: Alzheimer’s Association North Central Texas Chapter, Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus, United Way Area Agency on Aging, and the University of North Texas Health Science Center Fort Worth.

4th Annual Healthy Lives Matter Prostate Cancer Event

This year's Prostate Cancer Screening Event was by far our highest attended prostate cancer event. On Saturday, February 10th, Men and their families from across Tarrant County and beyond attended not only for their health, but for their loved ones as well. NACo Poverty Summit in Fort Worth, TX

As Tarrant County Commissioner and President of the National Association of Counties (NACo), Commissioner Brooks' presidential initiative focuses on the critical role counties play in breaking multi-generational cycles of poverty, especially with our children. This past December, Tarrant County hosted the NACo Poverty Summit in Downtown Fort Worth. More than 160 county leaders from across the country gathered in Fort Worth to examine anti-poverty initiatives and the critical role counties play in breaking multi-generational cycles of poverty. County leaders and national experts discussed the impact of poverty on children and families and how county leadership and investments in early childhood development help to lower future costs in health, child welfare, safety, justice and other systems.

Alzheimer's Education Seminar at TCC Trinity River

Commissioner Brooks held his 2nd Annual Healthy Lives Matter Alzheimer's Education Seminar on August 19, 2017. Over 200 attendees took advantage of educational sessions and information provided by over 40 local exhibitors. Commissioner Brooks New NACo President

On July 24, 2017, Tarrant County Commissioner Roy Charles Brooks was sworn in as the new President of the National Association of Counties (NACo). In his new role, Commissioner Brooks will focus on his presidential initiative, "Serving the Underserved." This initiative will focus on the critical role counties play in breaking multi-generational cycles of poverty, especially with children. NACo unites the country's 3,069 county governments and officials together to advocate on national policy, exchange ideas and build new leadership skills, pursue transformational county solutions, enrich the public's understanding of county government, and exercise exemplary leadership in public service. Healthy Lives Matter: 3rd Annual Prostate Cancer Screening Event

Thank you for HELPING US KNOCK PROSTATE CANCER OUT THE PARK! This past February 11th, Commissioner Brooks hosted the 3rd Annual Prostate Cancer Screening Event. Over 200 participants were in attendance from all across the DFW-Metroplex. The event provided men with FREE prostate cancer screenings. It also provided participants and their families with educational support through increased awareness.

Elected Official of the Year

On October 7, 2016, Commissioner Brooks was honored as Elected Official of the year by Cenikor at the Join The Voices For Recovery luncheon. The Cenikor Foundation provides quality substance abuse and behavioral health services in the community through a continuum care for adults and adolescents.

Commissioner Brooks’ has worked diligently to collaborate efforts with committed community partners to effect change. He continues to advocate and champion for opportunities for those who have stumbled along the way.

Inaugural HLM Alzheimer's Education Series Event

On August 20, 2016, Commissioner Brooks introduced the Inaugural Health Lives Matter Alzheimer's Education Series Event. This new education series provided participants with educational sessions, health services and resources which will increase awareness and become a trailblazer to new and improved service outlets. Over 200 participants were in attendance at the Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus in Downtown Fort Worth. Partners included prominent organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association, United Way Area Agency of Tarrant County and the UNT Health Science Center.

The Precinct One United Way Pancake Breakfast benefiting the United Way of Tarrant County took place this year on Friday, November 4. Due to Early Voting at the Southwest Subcourthouse, the event was moved downtown to the Tarrant County Administration Building, where there was a strong turnout. Commissioner Brooks was elected NACo First Vice President on July 24, 2016. He has been an active NACo member since 1991, where he has served in various leadership roles.

 

 

Healthy Lives Matter: 2nd Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Event

Our second annual Healthy Lives Matter: Precinct One Prostate Cancer Screening event was held Saturday, February 13, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Moncrief Cancer Institute. The purpose of the event is to provide men FREE prostate cancer screenings, as well as provide men -- and their families -- educational support through increased awareness. Through the help and support of our partners and sponsors, this event surpassed all expectations with a turnout of over 120 attendees and 106 participants tested. Commissioner Roy Charles Brooks, elected 2nd Vice President of the National Association of Counties

On Monday, July 13, 2015, Commissioner Brooks was elected as 2nd Vice President of the National Association of Counties (NACo) during the NACo Annual Conference in Charlotte, NC. Active in NACo since 1991, Commissioner Brooks has spent ten years on the Board of Directors having been appointed by eight NACo presidents. He has served as chair of the Large Urban Caucus, chair of the Healthy Counties Initiative, chair of the Health Reform Subcommittee, president of the National Association of Black County Officials and current chair of the National Organization of Black County Officials.

For 2015, I am pleased to announce and launch my new initiative, “Healthy Lives Matter.” As part of the first “Healthy Lives Matter” series, I hosted the inaugural Tarrant County – Precinct One Prostate Cancer Screening event. The event was held Saturday, February 14, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tarrant County Public Health. The purpose of the event is to provide men FREE prostate cancer screenings, as well as provide men -- and their families -- educational support through increased awareness. Through the help and support of our partners and sponsors, this event was a great success.

International Walk to School Day at C.C. Moss Elementary School

On Wednesday, October 8, the office celebrated and participated in INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY. Commissioner Brooks had the opportunity to walk to school with the children of C.C. Moss Elementary School. What an amazing turnout there was on this beautiful morning where over 400 students participated in this walk. Through the collaboration of the Fort Worth ISD, Tarrant County Public Health and the Blue Zones Project this was a successful and memorable event. Let us work hard to continue to promote a healthy fit lifestyle for ourselves and most importantly our future generations.
