Community Health Worker Institute
The Tarrant County Public Health Community Health Worker Institute is offering the Community Health Worker Certification Course, at no cost for the first 100 people to sign up. Must be a Tarrant County resident and 18 years and older.
Our training covers eight (8) CHW core competencies: communication, interpersonal skills, service coordination, organization skills, capacity-building skills, advocacy, teach skills, and knowledge base. We also cover emergency preparedness and public health, and COVID-19.

Who are Community Community Health Workers?
A Community Health Worker (CHW) is a community member who has the skills and training to help bridge the gaps between health care, social services and the community.
A CHW is a trusted member of the community who understands the community’s culture, language, socio-economic status and life experiences of the community they serve.
What do Community Health Workers do?
A CHW, also known as a promotor(a), assists people in gaining access to services they may need, and increases the community's health knowledge through different activities such as:
- outreach
- patient navigation and follow-up
- community health education and information
- informal counseling
- social support
- advocacy
- participation in clinical research
Who can become a CHW?
From homemaker to business owner to anyone who wants to make a difference in their community, can become a CHW. The perfect candidate is one who loves their community and wants to make a difference. You do not have to be in the medical field, have a degree or any formal training. You will receive what you need when you attend a training program.
How can you become a CHW?
There are two tracks that lead to becoming a certified CHW in the state of Texas: Experience and Non-Experience.
Experience
At least 1,000 cumulative hours of community health worker services within the past three (3) years.

Non-Experience
- Must be a Texas resident
- At least 16 years of age
- Must be 18 years of age to enroll in the Tarrant County Public Health Community Health Worker Institute
- Complete an approved DSHS-certified 160-hour CHW training program
